Rudolf Schlichter

(German, 1890 – 1955)
Rudolf Schlichter was a German Dada artist and a leading figure of Germany’s New Objectivity movement. Often working in watercolor, Schlichter depicted the raucous urban life of Berlin between wars, featuring prostitutes, corrupt politicians, and bohemian artists. Born on December 6, 1890 in Calw, Germany, he went on to study at the School of Arts and Crafts in Stuttgart and when called for military service during World War I, held a hunger strike until his conscription was nullified. In 1919 he moved to Berlin, joining the Dadaist movement and painting one of his best-known works: Dada Roof Studio (c. 1920), a colorful depiction of macabre mannequins gathered on an urban rooftop featuring the dreamlike, non-sequitur imagery of the Dada movement...
