Biography
Napoleon Abueva, also known as Napoleon Veloso Abueva, was a Filipino sculptor celebrated for his contributions to modern Philippine sculpture. He worked with a variety of materials including hard wood, adobe, metal, stainless steel, cement, marble, bronze, iron, alabaster, coral, and brass. Born in 1930 in Tagbilaran, Bohol, Philippines, he passed away in 2018 in Quezon City, Metro Manila, Philippines. Abueva was honored with numerous awards, including National Artist for Sculpture, the Republic Award for Sculpture, and the ASEAN Awards for Visual Arts. He was educated at the University of Bohol in Tagbilaran and the UP College of Fine Arts in Diliman. His works have been exhibited at places such as the Philippine Center in New York, and he has been a significant influence in the field of sculpture in the Philippines.
