Nyoman Masriadi
(Indonesian, born 1973)
Biography
Nyoman Masriadi is a contemporary Indonesian painter known for depicting narratives embedded in Indonesian cultural history. His superhuman figures offer an obtuse social commentary while also acting as vessels for painting volume and light, as seen in his work The Man From Bantul (The Final Round) (2000). “My inspiration came more from comic strips, which I have read avidly since I was a child,” he said of his work. “Those deformed figures are very much inspired by that, but on an indirect, subconscious level.” Born in 1973 in Gianyar, Indonesia, he received his training in art at the Institute Seni Indonesia Jogjakarta. Since then, Masriadi has gone to have exhibitions both in his country and abroad. The artist currently lives and works in Jogjakarta, Indonesia.
