Abdulmari Imao

Biography
Abdulmari Imao was born in 1936 in Siasi, Sulu, in the southern part of the Philippines. He was an accomplished sculptor and painter who was known for his deep commitment to preserving the rich cultural heritage of the Philippines.
In the 1960s, Imao moved to Manila to pursue his passion for art. He studied at the University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts and later went on to earn a Master of Fine Arts in sculpture from the University of Kansas in the United States. Throughout his career, Imao created a wide range of works in various mediums, including sculpture, painting, and printmaking, and he was also a writer, photographer and documentary film maker.
Among his most familiar recurring motifs is the Sarimanok, a mythical bird in Philippine folklore that symbolizes good fortune and prosperity, and one of his Sarimanok paintings in acrylic on canvas was sold at auction for $30,411, the highest price ever achieved for one of Imao’s works.
Imao died in 2014. During his lifetime, he received numerous awards and recognitions in honor of his contribution to the arts in the Philippines. He was conferred the Order of National Artists by former Philippine President Benigno Aquino III, and his works have been exhibited in major art galleries and museums around the world.
