Konrad Helbig was a German photographer and archaeologist best known for his intimate black-and-white images of young Sicilian men. Photographing both nude and clothed models, he posed his subjects in brightly lit, typically Italian landscapes. Helbig’s profound knowledge of Mediterranean cultures and the tradition of earlier photographers like Baron William von Gloeden and Guglielmo von Plüschow can be readily seen throughout his oeuvre: The postures and forms of Helbig’s nudes directly relate to Classical Greek and Roman sculptures. One of the best-known collections of his work was published as a book titled Homo Sum (2003), or “I am human” in Latin, which surveys his boldest erotic work from the 1950s and 1960s. Born in 1917 in Leipzig, Germany, he was a prisoner of war captured during World War II by the Soviet Union until 1947. Upon his release, Helbig poured himself into the study of art history and archaeology, especially of the Mediterranean region. He worked as writer and photographer for the travel magazines Merian and Atlantis, relating in-depth the nuances of the history, geography, people, and culture of the region to his readers. Notably, the nude photographs for which he is now famous were discovered posthumously at his home in Mainz. His works and archives are in the collections of the German Fotothek in Dresden and at the Bildarchiv Foto Marburg at the University of Marburg in Germany. Helbig died in 1986 in Mainz, Germany.
