Christy Brown

Biography
Christy Brown was an Irish writer and painter known for overcoming his debilitating cerebral palsy by using his foot to author several books including his autobiography My Left Foot (1954). His oeuvre consisted of stylized observational paintings of still lifes, portraits, and landscapes. Born on June 5, 1932 in Dublin, Ireland, Brown was the 10th of 22 children. His mother was determined to facilitate his mental capability, and taught Brown how to write and communicate. Brown later went one to become one of the first members of Arnulf Stegmann’s Disabled Artists Association, which provided him with a monthly stipend in exchange for a number of paintings each year. Much of his work belongs to the shared collection of the Little Museum of Dublin and the National Library of Ireland. Unfortunately, many of the artist’s paintings were thrown out by his abusive wife, Mary Carr. Brown died on September 7, 1981 in Somerset, United Kingdom.
