Duane Bryers

(American, 1911–2012)

Duane Bryers was an American illustrator and pin-up artist. He remains best known for his watercolors of playful female models, particularly his recurring character named Hilda. A curvaceous redhead often depicted in a state of undress, Hilda was the subject of numerous illustrations that highlighted her playfulness and clumsiness. “I got the idea for a plumpy gal pinup and thought I'd like to make it into a calendar series. But how was I going to sell a plump girl?” the artist remarked of his character, who was notably larger than most pin-ups at the time. The character found a huge following, and became a pin-up calendar staple for over 36 years. Bryers went on to move to Arizona in 1959, and embarked on a series depicting an idealized version of the American West, painting many scenes of weathered cowboys. Born in 1911 on a small farm in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, Bryers went on to work for ad agencies in Chicago and New York, eventually moving to Tucson, AZ in 1959. Bryers died on May 30, 2012 in Tucson, AZ, just one month shy of his 101st birthday.
