Condition
On the original stretcher and with the old nailing. Fine craquelures and a few losses of colour to the edges. In very good condition.
Comments
The sitter in front of the curtain is Marie, the artist's wife. The inscription shows that the painting was created in Entre-deux Monts, a small hamlet between Le Locle and La Sagne in the Jura, where François Barraud and his wife had taken a job as caretakers of the local school and painted in their spare time. The simple composition is entirely in the style of New Objectivity and yet is reminiscent of the prudish depictions of Venus by the old masters. In the same year, Barraud signed an agency contract with the Galerie Moos in Geneva, where he soon settled.
