Personification of Peace, 1902
watercolor on paper
signed Frederick Dielman and dated (upper right)
13 3/4 x 11 3/4 inches.
This lot is located in Chicago.
Property from The Private Collection of Ms. Darla Moore, Charleston, South Carolina
The present work is based upon the three-quarter left profile head of Peace in the mosaic mural Law, one of two murals Dielman designed for the House Reading Room in the new Library of Congress building. Dielman later used a variation of the Library of Congress head in three-quarter right profile for the head of Moderation, in The Editorial Function, one of seven mural paintings (now destroyed) the artist created for the business office of the new Evening Star building in Washington, DC. This watercolor variation may commemorate the unveiling of the Evening Star murals in 1902.
